#RiseBmore was conceived to mark the one-year anniversary of Freddie Gray’s death. The event at Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church began with a conversation about art and activism in Baltimore, featuring Aaron Maybin, Brittani McNeill, Sonja Sohn, Tariq Touré, and D. Watkins. This was followed by a concert, featuring Howard University’s Afro Blue, the Howard University Choir, cellist Lavena Johanson, the Occasional Symphony, and the Peabody Community Chorus. The evening culminated in a performance of Rise, by Judah Adashi and Tameka Cage Conley, bearing witness to America’s ongoing civil rights struggle.
On April 19, 2017, #RiseBmore becomes an annual tradition: a free evening of words and music, of and for Baltimore, in honor of Freddie Gray. Join us at Union Baptist Church for a 7:00pm conversation, Writing in the Margins of Baltimore, featuring Sharea Harris, Brittani McNeill, and Hannah Sawyerr, and an 8:00pm concert, with music by Judah Adashi, Tariq Al-Sabir, Ruby Fulton, Lafayette Gilchrist, Brooks Long, and Martina Lynch, and poetry by Tariq Touré.Details and reservations at RiseBmore.com.Read the Baltimore Sun's review of #RiseBmore2016.
